The Palmetto Moon is the State Flag of South Carolina. When South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860, the General Assembly requested designs of a new flag to represent the new Republic of South Carolina. The palmetto tree and crescent moon on a dark blue background was selected on January 28, 1861 and is still the state flag.
